What You Need to Know About Poultry Litter as a Soil Amendment

Micronutrients: Most farmers only apply micronutrients when their crops show a deficiency of some sort, the lack of micros in the soil have a direct impact on yields. It is very important to know that basically none of the chemical soil amendment that are available in bulk contain micronutrients of any kind, unless you purchase a blend or mix with your chemical soil amendment purchase. Poultry litter offers heavy amounts of Sulphur, Magnesium, Calcium, and Sodium, as well as adequate amounts of Iron, Aluminum Manganese, Copper, Zinc and Boron. Usually farmers only apply Micronutrients when Crops show a deficiency. However, it would be more beneficial to maintain your levels of Micros in the soil before it becomes a problem.

Organic soil amendments: These soil amendments are made from naturally occuring substances and waste remains of animals. They are naturally chemical-rich and contain amounts of Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium. Chemical soil amendments are man-made as oppose to organic soil amendments which are naturally produced. Chemical soil amendments are often a problem because of overuse and its quick release into the soil. On the other hand, organic soil amendments offer a slow release of nutrients into the soil and often offer a carryover. Chemical soil amendments also often kill the Microbes in the soil, unlike the organic soil amendments which boost helpful microbial activity in the soil.
